Out of the Cocoon of Carnal Desire - Wu Liyu's Femininity Consciousness

Chen Yihua

Foreword

The continuous posture of the woman in the picture is like a consciousness emerging from a cocoon. This is the appearance of a woman in the artist Wu Liyu's works. She calmly watches the unpredictable interpersonal relationships in the virtual age of the Internet with a decisive attitude.

Text

In clamorous artistic writing, female artists who use soft and light-weight media as their creative medium have gradually attracted attention. They look at themselves internally and externally, explore the essence of life from personal life experience, and develop their own personal strong aesthetic point of view.

Wu Liyu graduated from the Western Painting Group of the Fine Arts Department of the Cultural University and received a doctorate in art creation and theoretical research from the China Academy of Art in 2014. She has a unique expression of human body structure and picture composition based on both theory and technology. In 2014, the artist participated in the "Female Self Under the theme of “Exploring the Subconsciousness and the Subconscious”, and started experiments and explorations in different media; from the earliest composition of the surface with lace fabric and the semi-figurative human body, she then turned to the lace fabric as the main composition of the surface through the collage technique, and finally Developed to the practice of three-dimensional lace fabrics, the artist's unique vocabulary is created through continuous trials and experiments.

This series of works has a deep interpretation of women's self-viewing, and it shows women's inner spirituality. Lace and quick-drying glue are used on the medium to create a high-relief three-dimensional effect, and various wires and fabrics such as translucent ribbons, embroidery threads, mohair threads, and various textile trims and lace cloths of different designs are used, delicately interpreting the human body's texture and light and shade performance. In the composition of the picture, the characters are presented in continuous movements, creating a sense of musical flow for the vision. Through the differences in various wire materials, the picture presents a sense of wandering, making the painting vaguely exude spiritual uncertainty. The characters in the picture sometimes inhabit reality, and sometimes slide into the

digital network world. They move across the real and network worlds, presenting an unstable state.

Wu Liyu subtly reveals the keen and delicate consciousness of women with strong feminine characteristics, which is quite interesting. Take the translucent ribbon, the material used for the first time this year, as an example. In the past, lace was the main material, but this new series has added a translucent ribbon to change the viewing angle; the characteristics of the translucent ribbon have a strong metaphor, the ribbon Refers to a specific object (object), but the translucent quality means the separation between the inside (personal self) and the outside (the other). The artist uses this "translucent existence" to respond to the reality in the virtual world of the Internet. People are the subtle and unpredictable distance between the self and the individual being shaped.

In the creations of oriental women, artists who create soft sculptures are very common, but it is extremely rare to make three-dimensional textile materials such as lace and braided wire in the form of two-dimensional paintings. The use of this medium is difficult. The main reason is that after gluing, the sketch of the work cannot be changed. Under the premise that it cannot be modified, it is necessary to have a high degree of mastery of the human body. The artist has successfully created her own unique vocabulary with proficient techniques.

Wu Liyu's female posture has a completely different expression from the past. From the original sexy desire to the intellectual woman looking at the other side with a leisurely attitude, this kind of breaking out of the cocoon of physical desire and even the sublimation of spirituality, lets the poetic beauty interweave in the dense and complex female consciousness, forming the artist's inner representation of the soul, consciousness, and freedom. For the artist, this inner spiritual exploration path is self- evident.
